Venice Neighborhood Council Standing Committees to Review Proposed Venice Beach Concert Series
Location(s)
Los Angeles, Calif., July 29, 2008—The Venice Neighborhood Council's Arts Committee and Ocean Front Walk Committee will hold a joint meeting on Monday, August 4th at 6:00pm to review a proposed series of Saturday afternoon music concerts.
The meeting, to be held in the studio of the Blankenship Ballet Company in Venice, will review a proposal submitted by Michael (Micky) Schuman for a weekly concert series to take place annually throughout the Spring and Summer months. The first concert in this proposed series is scheduled for Saturday, August 16th, at Windward Plaza on Ocean Front Walk. Five additional concerts are planned for this year, with a full series of 22 concerts beginning next Spring.
"We expect that during and after the first year of production, that The Venice Beach Concert Series will be a very well known annual event in Los Angeles. People will know that on Saturday afternoons, they can come to Venice Beach, and safely enjoy a full day of great music… We will have Jazz, Rock, Pop, Country, Classical, R&B, Latin, Classic Rock, Alternative, African Middle Eastern, experimental, electronic, along with singer/songwriters, dancers, and celebrity hosts," Mr. Schuman said about the series. He went on to explain that his goal "is to have on an ongoing, annual concert series… that will not only provide great entertainment and peaceful afternoons for everyone, but also bring a great new annual event to our community…"
The proposed series has been criticized by some Ocean Front Walk community members due to potential noise problems, the possibility of generating additional traffic that already clogged streets won't be able to handle and the risk of creating new security and trash problems in an area that is ranked as the second largest tourist destination in the Los Angeles area.
The Blankenship Ballet is located at 132 Brooks Avenue at Main Street. The meeting will start promptly at 6:00pm and end no later than 7:30pm. There is no charge for this event. The public is encouraged to attend and comment on the proposed series. Time permitting, the meeting will end with a recommendation from the committees as to whether the planned series should be approved or denied by the full VNC Board. If the meeting runs longer than expected, each committee will take up the question of a recommendation at separate meetings to be held during the week.

Where: The Studios of the Blankenship Ballet Company, 132 Brooks Avenue (at Main Street)
When: Monday, August 4, 2008

powerlifting forum
We have no care for the well-being of visitors or the community, we just keep pouring on the crap and a 22 concert series is merely another needless, thoughtless, selfish event. I'd like to powerlifting forum nominate that Parks and Rec manage it, because a bunch phy ed. majors are always perfect for managing the second largest tourist venue in Southern California.
Proposal for a "Venice Beach Concert Series"
I'm sure the music will be great and many people will enjoy themselves but the people who live in the adjacent neighborhoods might as well give up those afternoons because the noise and the crowds are going to be oppressive for them.
Ocean Front Walk strip is jammed right next to a densely populated residential neighborhood. There is no distance separating them over which the sounds can diminish to a tolerable level. In addition, music played outside goes where it goes and the acoustics of the surroundings modify and amplify the sounds in ways that cannot be anticipated.
The result is so much noise going into the residences, that it prevents people from doing as they'd like in their own homes. Either they can listen to the noise or they can leave.
It's one thing to have a few of these spontaneous events over the course of a year but 22 during the Spring and Summer is going to become a major nuisance for the residents.
There is a fairly uniform attitude amongst people who play and promote music outside. That is that people who don't want to give up whatever they are doing and devote their attention to the performances should leave -- even if that means leaving their homes. This seems to be the attitude with respect to this proposal.
Oh goodie. Thank god for the
Oh goodie. Thank god for the Brain-trust that came up with this plan, because no one knows about Venice, no one ever comes here, our streets are quiet and lonely, this is totally what we need, it could put us on the map!
I'm all about elevating the existing abusive levels of noise, trash, congestion and crowds that burden this community - This concert series is an A1 way, brilliant way to get the job done! Thank you for such a mindful, caring idea!
I dig all events that detract from the health of the community, the environment and access to the beach! You remember the beach right? It's that strip of land beyond the outdoor mall/Boardwalk, it's that place with water and waves. Oh wait, maybe we can start selling t-shirts and sunglasses and put some amps and a big stage right on the sand!

After all, we don't need no stinkin' sand, surf or community, that's not what we are about - Why not hold the concerts every week, all year long!!
o goodie concert music series/ YEA!
Sounds like a really nice idea, actually. Hey, this is Venice! Get real. I bet you don't even walk on the sand. Probably stay in your air conditioned condo all day. If you don't like the arts in Venice, go back to Malibu or Beverly Hills, or anywhere else! And now multiple days of music throughout the year would be selfless Crap? Go get yourself an island. Or move back to where you came from. Cuz you aint from Venice. I BET REAL CITZENS OF VENICE WOULD LOVE MUSIC EVERY WEEK AS YOU SUGGESTED!! Great idea. I hope they do it.
Music Series
I agree with the first post, that as a 30 year resident, three blocks from the sand, Venice arts and a uncontrolled mass of people for Music series are very different. If the events are at various locations, with good organization, traffic control, parking, shuttle, trash clean up and responsible management, they could be fun. Various locations would spread the potential problems with noise, etc. around so those of us with our homes near Windward area don't get bombarded on a regular basis. Spread the joy around the neighborhood at Parks and different beach locations. It is selfish to think everyone wants to listen to the same music, level of noise, and likes crowds and trash on our streets. There has been great celebrations over the years...some of the best were at the traffic circle with Venice artists. THE KEY WAS GOOD PLANNING, AND RESPECT FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AND GOOD CLEANUP AFTERWARDS.
I don't like loud music and crowds, so as A REAL CITIZEN OF VENICE, NOPE I WOULD NOT LOVE MUSIC DOWN THE STREET EVERY WEEK. Venice as an artistic community has events all the time. Music is just one of many forms and should not dominate a neighborhood or have negative impacts on the neighbors.
