Letter from Fran Camaj regarding 1429 Abbot Kinney
January 22, 2007
Venice Neighborhood Council,
I would like to thank each council member for taking the time to review this narrative regarding the project at 1429 Abbot Kinney.
Before getting into the specifics on the project, I believe it is worth noting that Venice (Oakwood) has been my home for the past 11 years. I have done this to experience and be a part of its culture, diversity, originality, art, and overall funkiness. Abbot Kinney is an intricate and exciting part of the community, which is exactly what
motivated my family and I to purchase the property in 2004.
As the Abbot Kinney skyline continues to blend the old with the new, I continue to appreciate the original craftsman, stucco, and brick buildings, as well as the modern design and architecture. However, my heart lies with the history and tradition of the original buildings.
I mention this because I believe it is important to convey to the council what I do not want to do with the property: tear it down to build high and wide. This massive construction alternative is unquestionably the most profitable, and if the dollar were my sole
motivator, I'd be writing you today requesting height, code, and building variances.
I am, however, passionately driven to create something that I believe can become a very special part of Venice. The design and aesthetic for the vision of this project can best be described as: casual, yet sophisticated, but definitely not trendy. A warm, neighborhood establishment serving healthy, organic food with an innovative menu that evolves seasonally. Smaller plates, simple but brilliant wine list, and a modest enough price point that supports the relaxed atmosphere are central elements to the overall concept.
It cannot be overemphasized how intensely focused I am on serving incredible food. I have traveled to New York, San Francisco, and Las Vegas to taste and meet with several chefs of various culinary disciplines. You will notice that the kitchen design for this layout is afforded 1000 sq ft. This is double the standard or norm for projects this size. While we will be doing everything we can to realize this vision, allow me to guarantee what we will NOT have:
loud music, dancing, uninspiring food, drink specials, or less than friendly staff. Inside will be happy people, not happy hour.
This has been a snapshot of what is going to be created. The question is, will the Venice community support it?
In an effort to answer that question, I canvassed my AK neighbors. I knocked on the doors of 23 of my closest neighbors: Venice business owner, Venice property owner, and/or Venice resident. The project was explained in complete detail. 21 responded with an overwhelming
